A closeup view of an _Ariocarpus fissuratus_ leaf, showing a white crust on the surface of the leaves, and a thin folded membrane-like structure in the center of the leaves. _Ariocarpus fissuratus_ is a small, slow-growing succulent plant native to Northern Mexico. It flowers only in the fall, in response to shortening daylength. This specimen, photographed at the Orange Coast College Horticulture Department, is more than 20 years old.
