To make chain mail you start with a ring of metal (in this case aluminum, seen in the background), then twist it open before weaving it through existing rings.  After the ring has been woven into the pattern, it's bent shut to make it a ring again.  This also shows the pliers that are required: they have to be smooth jawed, so they don't mar the finish of the rings.
