Live Euglena at 200x
Euglena are both photosynthetic and organotrophic protists (they get energy both by consuming organic molecules and from light). This image is a cluster of live Euglena near an air bubble on a slide. Euglena move by contracting their cells into balls (much like an inchworm), which is why some of the individuals appear like balls while others are elongated. The yellow and blue streaks near a few indivudlas are motion artifats from the digital camera used; sorry.
