Bee feeding on a red buckwheat

Add to Lightbox
A honeybee feeds on a San Miguel Island buckwheat's bright pink flowers in this extreme closeup. The bee's body hairs, eyes, wings, and full pollen basket are sharply in focus as it pollinates the flower and feeds on its nectar. Many of the flowers are open showing their anthers, but others are still closed.
